In 2008 at the Western Australia Department of Health, a system-wide  Comprehensive Patient Blood Management (PBM) program was implemented and the original research in this article highlights a retrospective study of the program. The research includes data from over 600,000 patients at four major, adult tertiary-care hospitals over an an almost 6-year period where different outcome measures were monitored and analyzed. The study concluded that implementation of a unique, jurisdiction-wide PBM program was associated with improved patient outcomes, reduced product utilization, and product-related cost savings.
