Patient Blood Management (PBM) is one of the most important patient safety initiatives in the United States this decade. Blood products are also often one of the most expensive line items in the laboratory budget each year. Joseph Thomas, National Director of Patient Blood Management is featured on the cover of the February 2017 edition of Advance for Administrators of the Laboratory® in a feature titled “PBM Best Practices.” The key components of a world-class Comprehensive Patient Blood Management (cPBM) program are analyzed in the feature and real and quantifiable results of health systems that have partnered with Accumen to implement a cPBM program are presented. Thomas asserts that after implementing a formal cPBM program, laboratory administrators can reduce expenses while making a positive impact on clinical outcomes and patient safety.
